Phytoplankton, as the base of aquatic ecosystems, sustains the whole marine food web; however, the veracity to predict the global primary production challenged the biologists and oceanographers recently accounting for the solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR, 280-400 nm) as its negative or positive effects, especially the South China Sea that is notable for its shallower mixed layer and higher light transparency.

In this manuscript, we will report the spatial variability of UVR-induced inhibition on natural phytoplankton assemblages from the surface seawater of SCS. The results showed that UV-B (280-315 nm) significantly reduced the photosynthetic carbon fixation; however, responses of phytoplankton to UV-A (315-400 nm) varied from coastal to oceanic waters. In the coastal areas, UV-A could be used for carbon fixation under lower irradiance or filtered out PAR (400-700 nm), which was not observed in the open ocean. Our results indicated that whether the phytoplankton can utilize UVR as additional energy for carbon fixation depends on their cell-size. (Manuscript in preparation)
